It was in this year that Motor
Trend Magazine selected the entire line of American Motors automobiles
for its coveted "Car Of The Year" award.
Motor Trend was particularly impressed
with AMC's line of full-sized automobiles, which had been completely restyled
for 1963.
Also, a sporty new floor-shift overdrive
transmission, featuring a center console with "Twin-Stick" shifting (one
lever for the 3-speed and one for the overdrive), was introduced this year.
Motor Trend's praise was not the only
accolade that AMC received in 1963: the greatest award of all came from
buyers of AMC cars. Over 464,000 American Motors cars were sold in that
year -- an all-time high for American Motors Corporation sales.
